A trio of Canadians will participate in the 2023 Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, a WTA 500 event that takes place this week.
Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Fernandez and Rebecca Marino are all set to play in Abu Dhabi, with Andreescu being placed in the main draw. The 22-year-old most recently made it to the semi-finals in Thailand before being forced to retire against Lesia Tsurenko on Saturday.
Despite the setback, Andreescu posted on Instagram that she is looking forward to playing in the UAE.
Interestingly, Fernandez was not placed in the main draw and has to make her way through the qualifiers. The world No. 38 should expect to advance to the main draw, but qualifying is an added wrinkle that the 20-year-old may not have wanted.
Finally, 32-year-old Marino is a less surprising entrant in the qualifiers given her No. 70 ranking, and she'll be looking to advance past the first round of a tournament for just the second time in 2023.
