Leylah Fernandez gets her 2023 schedule underway in New Zealand as a participant in the ASB Classic.
The Auckland tournament will be the first since October for Fernandez, who dealt with some injury issues at the end of last year. The hiatus has seen Fernandez fall to No. 40 in the world, down from her career-high of 13th achieved in August of 2022.
At 20 years old, Fernandez is still seen as one for the future even though she can count two WTA tournament titles to her name, along with a finals appearance at the 2021 U.S. Open. The Montreal native looks to start the new year on a high note as the Australian Open looms later this month.
