Usually an early-season tournament, the BNP Parisbas Open at Indian Wells, Calif., makes its return as a fall fixture this year.
As with many other sporting events around the world, COVID-19 forced tournament organizers to move things around as the pandemic progressed. After the 2020 competition was cancelled outright, this year's edition comes as an October treat for tennis fans.
Returning to the tourney as defending women's singles champion is Bianca Andreescu, who announced herself to the tennis world in this competition during her dominant 2019 season. The 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., has had an up-and-down 2021 season and will hope to recreate some of her magic in the Coachella Valley.
Meanwhile, another young Canadian is making her way up the ranks of the women's tennis circuit, as 19-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez turned heads as one of two teenage finalists at the U.S. Open last month. While she didn't win on the day, Fernandez's run to the final shone the spotlight on the Montreal native, who had already been quietly putting together a successful season beforehand.
Now Fernandez enters Indian Wells as a known quantity, and with the expectations that come with it. The teenager has shown she can win as an underdog, but now she'll have to do so as an equal.
