Fernandez is the 18th seed.

The BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells is back, less than six months after last year's edition.

Traditionally an early-season tournament, Indian Wells was cancelled outright in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was shifted to October in 2021 for the same reason. Now the Coachella Valley competition is back in its regular March setting, with most of the big names of the tennis world involved.

Included in that list is 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez, the Montreal native who has put herself among the elite of the women's game thanks to a breakout season last year. Fernandez has continued her upward trajectory in the early-going for 2022 and enters Indian Wells coming off her second-straight Monterrey Open title win.

Joining Fernandez as tournament favourites are the likes of Maria Sakkari, Karolína Plíšková, Angelique Kerber and Emma Raducanu. Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka also enters the competition as an unseeded player, and she'll be watched eagerly by fans as she attempts to return to the form that made her one of the more dominant women's players over the past several years.
