The Canadian returns to action as the No. 8 seed.

It's been over a month since Bianca Andreescu has stepped on a WTA court, but the Canadian tennis star has confirmed her return at the 2021 Miami Open.

Andreescu last played in the Phillip Island Trophy after an early exit from the Australian Open. The 20-year-old made it to Feb. 18's semifinal before bowing out to Marie Bouzkova in a three-set thriller. Since then, Andreescu has been sidelined through injury, which has become a recurring issue for the youngster after her meteoric rise to women's tennis's upper echelons in 2019.

Even during a crazy year in which she captured the Indian Wells, Rogers Cup, and U.S. Open titles, injuries hampered Andreescu's ability to stay on the court. But now the Mississauga, Ont., native says she's back for what is hopefully a lengthy run through the 2021 schedule.

Andreescu, currently ranked ninth in the world, will occupy the No. 8 seed in Miami and will start her tournament in the Round of 64.

Unfortunately there will no other Canadian women in the main draw after the country's newest singles champion, 18-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez, understandably fell in straight sets in her qualifying match on Monday — less than 24 hours after winning the WTA Monterrey Open. Ottawa's Gabriela Dabrowski also fell in the qualifiers.
