The WTA Tour returns to Canada for one of the marquee non-Grand Slam events of the year.
Now known as the National Bank Open, the long-running Canadian tournament is a WTA 1000 event that attracts the biggest names on the tour. That means players like Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Iga Świątek, Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur and more will be gracing the hard courts on the campus of York University in Toronto. Along with the international stars, homegrown competitiors Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Fernandez and other Canadians will also take part, giving fans a local rooting interest.
Andreescu comes in as a former champion, as she won the tournament back in 2019. The 22-year-old has shown flashes of her dominant form from three years ago, when she also won the U.S. Open and Indian Wells, but she enters her hometown competition a question mark after a back injury slowed her down at last week's Silicon Valley Classic.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Fernandez has taken over the crown as Canada's great young hope after a superb 2021 season that included a run to the U.S. Open final. Fernandez has not played since her quarterfinal exit at the French Open in May, so fans will be eager to see how the Montreal native fares after the hiatus.
