British heavyweight Fabio Wardley believes that Anthony Joshua has made the right decision to change his training setup ahead of his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

The Ukrainian defeated Joshua in their first title fight back in September but they are expected to fight, almost a year later, in Saudi Arabia for the rematch.

Ahead of the fight, Anthony Joshua has added Robert Garcia to his backroom team as well as elevating Angel Fernandez to lead trainer.

Wardley believes changes needed to be made but wondered if there was enough time for the full effects to work through.

Speaking on the DAZN Boxing Show, he said: “It’s always going to be a tough one for AJ. He’s made a good step bringing in an additional trainer, someone good, someone with experience, who knows their stuff.

“Probably the only question mark for me is: is there enough time? To really put together a really solid game plan against somebody as smart as Usyk. We can understand how he does so, so many small, slight things that wear you out that you’ve not really come across before. It’s really strange to explain.”

Wardley concluded: To bring in a trainer is a good idea but whether he has enough time to work it out, implement it, not just repeat it a few times in the gym...

“You need it to be muscle memory in the ring. I’d always want AJ to win, but I think it’s going to be a repeat.

Wardley is next in action on the undercard of Derek Chisora vs. Kubrat Pulev 2, which airs live Saturday July 9 on DAZN everywhere except France, Australia and New Zealand. Click here for more details and how to subscribe.
