Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad were looking to make statements in their UFC Fight Night main event clash on Saturday. Edwards was looking to impress after a 20-month layoff, while Muhammad wanted to prove that he belongs in the welterweight division's upper echelon. 
 
Neither man got what they desired as the bout went to a no-contest after Edwards poked Muhammad in the right eye for the second time in the fight as in many rounds.  
 
"I apologize to Belal, I didn't mean to do it," Edwards said in his post-fight interview. "I went for the crosshead kick, he stepped into it, and I really apologize. I would rather have lost than that. I'm just heartbroken. I don't know what to say."

You couldn't tell that Edwards (18-3-1) had been out of action for nearly two years. He looked sharp from the opening bell. His punches were fluid, he had good movement, and wobbled Muhammad with a head kick in the first round. In what ended up being a sign of things to come, Edwards accidentally poked Muhammad in the eye in the final minute of the opening stanza.  
 
Moments into the second, Edwards went to throw a body kick, and he had his left arm in the air with his fingers open and once again poked Muhammed in the eye. Immediately, Muhammad screamed in agony and fell to the mat. The ringside doctor came into the Octagon, and Muhammad told him and referee Herb Dean that he couldn't see out of his right eye, which was slowly dripping blood.  
 
It was unknown what the final result would be, considering it was the second time Edwards committed the foul until the result was read. 

"I felt great. I don't believe in ring rust," Edwards said. "I won the first round clearly, I just wanted to show more ... to have that opportunity taken away from me, obviously accidental. I'm just heartbroken."

Jessica McCaskill shocked the boxing world in August when she moved up in weight to dethrone Cecilia Braekhus to become the undisputed women's welterweight champion and snapped Braekhus' undefeated streak.

McCaskill (9-2, 3 KOs), also a former unified junior welterweight titleholder, and Braekhus are running it back on Saturday night from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, live on DAZN. 

Before the third woman in the four-belt era to be undisputed champion puts her gold on the line, McCaskill talks with DAZN News about whether Braekhus underestimated her the first time around, why the rematch is so personal, and a potential lucrative fight with Katie Taylor.

DAZN News: Cecilia really poo-pooed your win in August. She thought she won the fight, or it should have been a draw. When she comes out and says that, what do you make of her saying that? And do you think she isn't giving you the credit you deserve?

Jessica McCaskill: She's trying to convince herself that she has any chance for this fight. She's trying to convince herself that she should even still be boxing, and I think she's just done. She seems so happy for us to return her belts and for the fight to be over and kind of a relief of like, 'Man, I don't have to do this anymore'. That's why her talk about retirement is so convincing because I feel like she really meant it. And that's fine. She could retire after this fight. Take the loss and go retire, and then we'll move on to the next thing.

DN: You feel like she underestimated you? 

JM: Everybody underestimates me. One of the things that my coach Rick Ramos says all the time is that I translate bad over tape. So if you're watching old fights or mitt sessions, I don't translate very well. You can't see power just over the screen. You have to feel it. I don't think anybody knows what it's like to be in the ring with me.

DN: What do you make of the Clarissa Shields situation because she said she went shopping around to various outlets, and they couldn't get nothing done and had to go to the pay-per-view route? She was talking about a lot about pay and women should be paid more. Why do you think women's fighters are so vastly underpaid because, more often than not, they're putting out more exciting fights than the men, and yet men are getting paid more money while women are getting underpaid and doing the same amount of work?

JM: I feel like you have to be an all-around person. Your character, your personality, your work ethic, your training, your performance in the ring, and your boxing knowledge. All of that has to be really high for you to be able to get those decent paydays. You have to say no to bad paydays. There's girls out here taking $8,000 for a fight or just doing ridiculous fights where they know they're going to get hurt, and then they're out of the game for however long, and then they try to get back in it. It's really diluting the ability of the female pool. When you're doing things that you shouldn't be doing, whether it's taking a fight, you shouldn't be taking and getting injured or taking money that you shouldn't be taking. Now the girls under us in a different generation, they're coming in with lowball prices thinking that's how it should be. It's not how it should be. You just have to be that all-around fighter. Don't give it a terrible show, or don't be the person that when the promoter calls, you're not in the gym. I don't know what that means. I basically live in the gym. Don't have a poor attitude and argue with your Twitter followers and expect that people are going to like you and people are going to try to pay you money. It's ridiculous. They won't do it.

DN: Let's talk a little more about the pay. What is it going to take for more networks and more promotional outlets to give women the spotlight that they do deserve?

JM: It's going to take some of the biggest names, (like) the Ryan Garcia's and the Canelo's. The biggest name in female boxing, they don't have personality. You said I have personality. You don't see Katie Taylor out there talking with people. I don't even think she runs her social media. She seems very robotic in person. It might take some of those other people that have amazing personalities to really push and step up and kind of advocate for female boxing.

DN: Are you that person, considering you are only the third woman to become an undisputed champion. Do you feel like someone like yourself could be that person to help push women's boxing to the forefront?

JM: Yes. When I beat Cecilia again, you guys will see that.

DN: Why is this fight so personal because you're pretty chill and pretty laid back? I've talked to Cecilia the same amount of times I've talked to you, and she's always been pretty mild-mannered. What is it about her that brings it out in you? What about you brings it out in her?

JM: For me, they crown her "The First Lady". Her resume isn't impressive. I would have probably knocked out half or more of the girls on her resume. She has zero personality. She doesn't promote the fights. Like I said before, you have to be completely well-rounded. I'm showing myself in the gym. I'm showing my new mouth guards. I'm showing my hotel room. We're doing e-pressers. I made pants with my followers' names on it because I wanted to bring them to the fight with me. I'm doing a lot to keep the people interested and keep the fans interested. Whereas other people just think I'm here and so you have to worship me, I'm just in this place, and you guys do all the work. If I had to sell tickets, I would be out there selling tickets if I have to. People think they're too good for that stuff. I don't put myself above anybody.

DN: What does a win mean for you in the grand scheme things on Saturday night?

JM: Definitely Hall of Fame. I think we've already established that with the first fight. Being able to stop Cecilia from breaking Joe Lewis' record and beating the only person that beat an undisputed person and stop her winning streak altogether. You spoke about Katie Taylor earlier, and they want to put that fight together. There's a lot of maybes, ins and outs, and I say, let's do it. Let's do a rematch. This will be the first time two females make a million dollars. This is big stuff. You know all of Ireland wants to see it. Everybody across the sea wants to see it. It gives hope to other fighters that are under me that they won't have to take those crappy paydays and that they can expect to make big money in boxing.

DN: When you envision the fight in your head when it comes to Saturday night, how do you win the fight and remain the undisputed women's welterweight champion?

JM: I'm telling you when I sit here, and I run through combinations in my head, I just keep seeing her fall. I'm going to be dead honest. I keep seeing her fall. I see her quitting on her stool. I see her giving up and just know that she's out of it.

Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada headline a triple-header of world championship action on Saturday in what could be one of the fights of 2021 so far.

The duo face off in a super-flyweight unification bout, more than eight years after their first encounter at light-flyweight which was won by Chocolatito.

“I’ve been waiting for this fight for almost nine years," said Estrada, the current WBC and The Ring titleholder. "I’ve been ready for the opportunity. He’s a good champ, he’s a good fighter and may the best man win. 
  
“We waited a long time; I have three losses and I’ve already avenged two of them, but we train really hard and I’m ready for this fight. 
  
“This is going to be better than the first one. It’s going to be a war and the people watching will be the real winners. 
  
“Without a doubt it’s a fight that we have all been waiting for a long time. There is a lot of expectation, it’s been nine years in the making. People would always ask when we would fight again. It’s going to be exciting and I’m concentrating on giving a good fight this Saturday.”

Gonzalez, the WBA (Super) champion, said: “First of all, God bless everyone, I’m really happy, I’m blessed by God and DAZN and Mr. Honda, we’ve done a really good camp and we are ready for this fight.

Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez vs. Juan Francisco Estrada: Odds, prediction and betting trends

A big-time contest occurs on Saturday night where the winner looks to put themselves in prime position for a welterweight title shot as No. 3-ranked Leon Edwards takes on No. 13-ranked Belal Muhammad from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nev.

Edwards had been set to face Khamzat Chimaev on multiple occasions. But Chimaev has unable to recover from the coronavirus, and the UFC decided to go in a different direction so Edwards can finally compete after being inactive since July 2019. Even though he just beat Dhiego Lima at UFC 258, Muhammad is stepping up to plate on four weeks' notice.

Edwards returns for the first time in 20 months, riding an eight-fight winning streak. In his last time out, the Englishman defeated former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision. "Rocky" hasn't suffered defeat since December 2015. Who did Edwards lose to? Muhammad enters the biggest contest of his career and his first UFC main event by winning eight of his nine fights, including a current four-fight winning streak. "This is a guy (Edwards) that won eight of his last nine fights, and a guy who won eight fights," Muhammad said. "In the old UFC days, this is the frickin' main event."

What has all the makings to be an early candidate for "Fight of the Year" takes place on Saturday night from the American Airlines Center in Dallas when Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez battles Juan Francisco Estrada for the second time in a super flyweight title unification bout. The entire fight card can be seen on DAZN in over 200 countries worldwide. The co-main event features Jessica McCaskill meeting Cecilia Braekhus in a rematch for the undisputed women's welterweight championship.

The pair met in November 2012, with Gonzalez winning by unanimous decision to retain the WBA junior flyweight title. Since then, Gonzalez and Estrada have taken different paths to get to this point.

After the first fight, Gonzalez went on to win 12 consecutive contests to become the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport to his record to 46-0. Then Gonzalez ran into Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who ended up beating 'Chocolatito' in back-to-back fights. Gonzalez was being written off and considered past his peak. The native of Nicaragua dug deep down and has won four straight fights, which includes winning the WBA (super) super flyweight belt from Kal Yafai via ninth-round TKO in February 2019. Gonzalez last competed in October, beating Israel Gonzalez via unanimous decision.

Since losing to Gonzalez, Estrada's won 15 of 16 fights, with the only setback coming to Sor Rungvisai via majority decision in February 2018. Two fights later, Estrada exacted revenge and beat Sor Rungvisai in April 2019 to win the WBC title. Returning to the ring for the first time in over five months, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai showed no signs of ring rust as he easily dispatched Kwanthai Sithmorseng on Friday in Bang Phun, Thailand.

The match was less than three rounds in before Sithmorseng took a knee to stop Sor Rungvisai from landing punch after punch with little opposition, and although he managed to finish the round Sithmorseng's corner called the bout off before the fourth could begin. 

It was the kind of dominant display Sor Rungvisai (50-5-1, 43 KOs) would've expected for his 50th win as a professional, and it sets up a potential trilogy bout against the winner of Saturday's super flyweight unification fight between Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada (8:00 p.m. ET, <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/news/boxing/chocolatito-vs-estrada-start-time-and-how-to-stream-roman-gonzalez-vs-juan-francisco-estrada-on-dazn/qely2ipft1ie1cejesfcvv4ht">live on DAZN</a>).

“I prepared very well for this fight,” Sor Rungvisai said immediately after defeating Sithmorseng, <a href="https://www.ringtv.com/619048-srisaket-sor-rungvisai-dominates-sithmorseng-looks-to-face-estrada-gonzalez-winner-this-year/">as quoted by RingTV</a>, “but I didn’t rush it. I wanted to get a few rounds in so that I can be ready for the big fight late this year.

“It will be a great fight [Saturday] between Estrada and Chocolatito. I think whoever prepared the best for this fight will win. I hope that Estrada will win because we have unfinished business. I want to get revenge.”

Sor Rungvisai has squared off with Gonzalez and Estrada twice each, with his most recent loss coming at the hands of Estrada on Apr. 26, 2019. While he has "unfinished business" with Estrada, Sor Rungvisai said he will be prepared for whomever wins Saturday's bout.

“Best of luck to Team Estrada and Team Chocolatito,” he said. “May the best man win. We will see the winner later this year.”

The UFC welterweight division is as deep as it's ever been. Led by champion Kamaru Usman, the weight class boasts former title challengers Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal, Gilbert Burns, and Stephen Thompson. You also have former titleholder Tyron Woodley, who is a couple of wins away from putting his name back in the conversation. 

One name missing from that list is Leon Edwards as he headlines this Saturday's UFC Fight Night event against No. 13-ranked Belal Muhammad from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nev. 

Edwards (18-3) returns to the Octagon for the first time in 20 months. But it isn't due to a lack of trying to compete. He's had four fights pulled from him in the last 12 months due to COVID-19. With an eight-fight winning streak and a No. 3 ranking to his name, Edwards feels if he does his job and takes care of business, the next crack at Usman belongs to him. 
 
"Yes, for sure,' Edwards told DAZN. "I should be next in line. I worked my way up. My last loss was over five years ago. I've paved my way, and I believe I should be next in line. When I win on Saturday, I will be next."  
 
The 29-year-old had been tabbed to headline in his native England against Woodley in March 2020. But the coronavirus pandemic reared its ugly head and put a halt on traveling for the time being, so the entire card got canceled. Then the UFC reached out to Edwards to face Usman at UFC 251 on a little less than five weeks' notice. With gyms in the UK shut down at that time, Edwards was unable to train and couldn't accept the opportunity.

Wanting to get back in there, "Rocky" accepted a fight against rising star Khamzat Chimaev for December. But Edwards contracted COVID, and the contest got moved to January 20, three days before UFC 257 that featured Dustin Poirier beating Conor McGregor. However, Chimaev contracted COVID, and the fight got postponed once again. The UFC wanted Edwards-Chimaev to happen, so it got switched to this Saturday. Chimaev had to pull out four weeks due to lingering effects from COVID. The organization wanted Edwards to remain on the show, and Muhammad stepped up to the plate. 
 
While most people would have been upset, Edwards chose to keep it positive because things could have been a lot worse. 
 
"It's all about perspective, really," Edwards said. "Obviously, I had a hard year. COVID hit. I couldn't travel. My first flight canceled on me when I was supposed to fight Tyron Woodley in my first main event in the UK, and I had the opportunity taken away from me. From there, it spiraled out of control. I kept having flight cancellations. That matchup with Khamzat got canceled again. It was a frustrating time in my fight career. There's a lot of people in the world who are struggling way worse than me. I'm healthy. My family is healthy. I get to train every day and improve my skillset and train my mind. Now we're back in action.  
 
"People were turning the fight down, and Belal stepped up. You have to give him respect for doing that. I always love a guy who talks a big game and backs it up. Unfortunately, everybody talks like they will fight whenever but they don't step up when called upon. I realized that's not what Belal Muhammad is about."

Leon Edwards feels a UFC Fight Night win nets him a title shot

Juan Francisco Estrada is confident of revenge when he meets Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez for the second time on Saturday night from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The pair first fought in 2012 for the WBA world light flyweight title, with Gonzalez taking the victory by unanimous decision. The 33-year-old has since claimed titles in four different weight divisions, the first Nicaraguan to do so. Speaking to <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/home/ArticleId:1igckm22cf66h125rzlxbqafkq" target="_blank">The Ak & Barak Show on DAZN</a>, The Ring and WBC super flyweight champion thought this fight would be a different proposition.

“The truth is I'm really looking forward to this fight," Estrada said. "It’s almost nine years after the first time we fought. I’m really excited, we had excellent preparations, and back then it was two weight classes different than the fight now, so I feel stronger now and I’m ready to go. I always say you win the fight outside the ring and especially with physical conditioning. I’m a complete fighter and depending on how my opponent fights that’s how I'm going to fight, but really, I was focusing on my physical conditioning and sparring. 

“We already focused a lot on strength in my previous fight with Carlos Cuadras, and I was able to show it - winning by knockout.”

While pleased with his preparations, and confident of victory, the 30-year-old Mexican is not underestimating Gonzalez in the slightest bit. Estrada plans on avenging his loss nine years ago in emphatic fashion.

“I consider Roman Gonzalez to be a future Hall of Famer, and beating him would be beating somebody with such a great legacy, he has finished most of his rivals. He’s held important titles, and I think a victory against him would allow me to enter the conversation as one of the best in the lower weight classes. Because I already fought him I know his strengths and his weaknesses. I believe I have the possibility of knocking him out. He’s already been knocked out, so I think that’s something I can do as well.”

DAZN News: I look at those arms, and I am sincerely jealous. How many times a day are you hitting the gym? 

Alex Hammerstone: It's just once a day, but it's maybe for a little bit more prolonged period of time than most people would be.

DN: Now, how long do you go to the gym for each session?

AH: I mean, I could usually easily eat up about two hours. But that's not that's just for the weight training. Because later in the day, I'll usually be down at a wrestling school rolling around with guys or doing some kind of cardio. So I can't spend all day just doing weights like I'd want to.

DN: For the fans that don't know much about you, Alex, you're making your way up, and right now, you're the MLW National Openweight champion. How did you get your start in pro wrestling?

AH: I think it's very similar to a lot of people. I don't have that unique of a story. I was just one of those guys that loved it in my whole upbringing. When I was about 19 years old, I was in college, ready to have a normal route to maybe getting a college degree and becoming an engineer. I just had a couple of life experiences that said, 'Hey, you know what, you got to go give that crazy dream a try and give it a whirl'. So I was lucky to find the wrestling school just a couple miles from me, and pretty much once I got started, the rest is history. There was no turning back.

DN: What were some of those life experiences that led you to get into wrestling?

AH: My dad ended up going through some health problems. He just gave me that speech one day realizing that life never turns out exactly how you expect it. You never know what's going to happen. You never know how long you have, so take each day and spend it how you want to and not how society or your parents, boss, girlfriend, or however they may pressure you to act or whatever standards you think you're living up to. It really comes down to how do you want your life to turn out? I gave up the guaranteed path and took the gamble on what I thought was my dream, and it's paid off for me thus far.

DN: Do you feel like in a roundabout way, you're wrestling for your dad? 

AH: It's definitely something that he had a part in. The sentiment is more than anything because he was a guitar player. After his situations, he was no longer able to play guitar. He was no longer able to sing. He kind of lost out on that part of his life. So to be able to watch me live out the dreams that I want to and take those chances that he would have when he was younger. It's definitely something that he had a part in for sure.

DN: What would he say to you right now? 

AH: Wrestling when we were growing up, he thought wrestling was very weird. I remember a couple of times my brother and I watching it and him telling us to turn that crap off. He was never the biggest fan of it. But the second I got involved with it, that all changed. He definitely became a fan, became very interested, and did his best to support me. Every time he's come to see me, despite being stuck in a wheelchair, he does his best to get on his feet and make some noise. He's always been very supportive. He just wants me to take it as far as I want to take it.

DN: You are regarded by many in pro wrestling as one of the fastest rising stars. How does it make you feel when you hear that?

AH: It definitely feels good. It's just having that connection with fans and people around the world. It's phenomenal, and this last year more so than ever before, it became very apparent what that means to me. We were kind of stuck and isolated in our own homes, and wrestling was kind of pushed to the back burner for awhile. To still manage this connection and have this interaction with fans, writers, and all these people, it's such a cool feeling to see how I've impacted these people, and I've become someone that these people enjoy to watch. It means the world to me. I didn't have one of those careers where I caught fire and became the hot new thing in my first year or two. I've been doing this for about ten years. So to start catching that momentum and be regarded as one of the top guys in the industry right now is such a great feeling, and it really validates all the hard work I put in over the years.

DN: When do you feel like it clicked for you?

AH: I don't know if there's necessarily any one moment. There's been a couple of companies over the years that have really put a lot of faith in me and taking those jumps where they put me in the ring with some talented people and just never really having a moment where I felt like I was outclassed with anyone made me a little bit more confident each time that happens. Then I would definitely say signing with MLW and jumping in and almost be thrown into the deep end immediately and rising maybe not to the top but immediately going on the rise and becoming one of the standout guys. I knew what I wanted to accomplish by signing there. I know there were a lot of guys who were there before me and who'd already been kind of doing their best to stand out and be top guys. For me to be able to cut in line so to speak, that really let me know that you know I have something here and I know what I'm doing.

DN: A big match coming up Friday night on DAZN with LA Park. The name speaks for itself. What does it mean to you to be able to step inside the ring with the Lucha Libre legend?

AH: Like you said, he's a Lucha Libre legend. In an age where up-and-coming wrestlers seem to be losing that degree of respect for veterans, I'm one of the guys who I have all the respect in the world for anyone who came before me or anyone who helped pave the way. LA Park falls in that category. He has my respect. But at the end of the day, if you're coming for my championship with that respect, with that tenure, with that veteran status you earned, it's a product of being in this business for years and years and years, which means you've honed your craft, you've learned maybe a couple of tricks that I haven't. But it also means that you've got an aging body, and I've got youth on my side. All the respect in the world isn't going to hold me back from giving it my all and making sure I retain my championship.

Anthony Joshua’s beaten Olympic opponent Zhilei Zhang suffered from kidney failure and anaemia after his fight with Jerry Forrest, his co-manager Terry Lane revealed.

The 37-year-old Chinese fighter fought Joshua in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympics heavyweight competition. He had been hoping to set up a rematch with Joshua as professionals, though the British fighter is focused on an expected bout with Tyson Fury. Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/competition/Competition:bzpqauzx2yqmxub341gk3dzs3/ArticleId:jm0yjxkku78h1q1jirvtzsbmq" target="_blank">recently told DAZN</a> he expects that fight to be agreed soon.

Zhang had appeared in control against the 32-year-old Forrest, sending him to the canvas three times in the fight before rapidly fading to hold on for a draw. Since the fight he has been in hospital with kidney problems, and has also been given a diagnosis of anaemia.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.badlefthook.com/2021/3/11/22326259/zhilei-zhang-experienced-kidney-failure-liver-damage-anemia-fight-jerry-forrest-boxing-news-2021" target="_blank">Bad Left Hook</a>, Lane said: “Zhang had a great camp. For some reason, he was extremely dehydrated and his kidneys began to fail during the fight. He also had very low iron levels and we learned he was anaemic. He was rushed to the hospital and wasn’t released for three days. Head and heart were fine, thank god. But he feels good, and we are talking to some medical professionals to get to the bottom of what happened and what is going on with him. But he will be back. Matchroom has been very supportive.”

Lane continued: “When the final bell rang, Forrest is doing backflips in the middle of the ring and Zhang is slumped over his corner. Zhang has no recollection of the walk back to the locker room. Of course, my mind goes to the worst place; a brain bleed or something. There were several of us in the back, and it was determined that he should go to the hospital. Then Zhang started to feel worse and ultimately they rushed him in an ambulance.”

Lane summed up the problems Zhang has had to deal with, saying: “Low level kidney failure, liver damage, anemic. CPK [creatine phosphokinase] levels through the roof. “It was scary, and a bit of a mystery, but we are going to fully address all of these issues with medical professionals.”

Former MMA fighter Ben Askren has branded rival Jake Paul ‘an idiot’ ahead of their fight on April 17.

The pair will meet next month in a pay-per-view event at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Speaking to <a href="https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2021/03/ben-askren-perplexed-jake-paul-popularity-youtube-social-media" target="_blank">MMA Junkie Radio</a>, Askren says he does not understand why the YouTube celebrity is so famous to begin with.

“I’m yet to get an answer that I’m fully satisfied with,” Askren said.  “I don’t really get it.”

Askren recounted how the younger generation have tried to explain the reason for his fame or his brother, Logan Paul

“I don’t think there’s any good answer,” Askren said. “They’re all like, ‘He does a lot of dumb things.’ Or, ‘He says crazy stuff.’ But it’s like, OK. So? So what? There’s nothing that … I don’t know. People who I liked growing up: Chris Farley, I think he’s hilarious; Chris Rock, I think he’s hilarious; Muhammad Ali, I’m inspired by this man. People who I liked, I could name a reason why I liked that person. And with these guys, that just doesn’t seem to be the case.”

The 24-year-old Paul has two professional boxing wins to his name, against AnEsonGib - another YouTube celebrity - and former NBA player Nate Robinson. Askren is 12 years older than Paul and has had a career in wrestling and MMA before moving to boxing. He is not planning to teach his rival anything with his experience when they meet, saying: “Jake Paul’s gonna be an idiot before me, he’s gonna be an idiot after me.

“This guy’s an idiot," Askren stated. "That’s what he does. What kind of lesson? He’s too stupid to learn anything.”

Ben Askren says Jake Paul is an idiot, too stupid to learn anything

Michel Rivera believes he could beat any of the lightweight division’s title holders.

The 23-year-old Domincan Republic fighter is unbeaten in 20 fights, most recently beating Anthony Mercado on February 27 in a welterweight contest. However, he is now ready to drop down the scales in order to test himself in the lightweight division.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.boxingscene.com/michel-rivera-return-on-david-bendavidez-undercard--154552" target="_blank">BoxingScene.com</a>, Rivera namechecked every big name in the division and claimed he would have the beating of them all.

"I hope that the top guys at 135 like Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney would accept a fight with me. I have the talent and the potential to dethrone any of them," Rivera said.

Lopez is due to defend his belts against George Kambosos Jr., <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/news/boxing/eddie-hearn-why-is-ryan-garcia-not-fighting-devin-haney/td1hguuh7pw81ok3duu76om7o" target="_blank">Ryan Garcia has yet to agree to his next fight</a> after claiming he would face Manny Pacquiao, Gervonta Davis has been linked with a fight with Mario Barrios and Devin Haney, like 'Tank', also needs his first fight of 2021.

Rivera managed to fight twice in a coronavirus-struck 2020 but wants to fight more this year in order to prepare for a title bid in 2022.

"The plan is to be more active this year and thanks to God I feel ready for whatever test is put in front of me. I believe that I will be the best in the sport," he said.

Mike Tyson says he will be looking for a knockout in his next seniors boxing contest, expected to happen this year, after claiming he did not go full-pelt in his in-ring return against Roy Jones Jr. late last year.

The eight-round exhibition on Nov. 28 in California did great business, drawing 1.6 million buys. That inevitably led to talk of Tyson doing it again, with old rival Evander Holyfield the likely opponent.

On his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdtNjOwfQpgVK0FyOeLyzrg">Hotboxin</a>' podcast, Tyson said fans would see more in a second bout, now that he has re-adjusted.

"I felt better than I anticipated," he said of the Jones fight. "I thought I would be a little more nervous than I was, but I was relaxed. I felt like 'wow' - I could do some more, I could punch more combinations, I could do this and do that.

"I said 'wow, this is interesting' and I want to do it again and I want to do it against someone I could go all out on. It made me interested in wanting to do it again.

"I wanted to go the distance, I didn't want to knock anybody out, that's what people expected, but I wanted to go the distance."

If the exhibition with Holyfield comes to fruition, it will be the third battle between the two, albeit a far cry from the first pair of fights.

They went at it twice in the 1990s in full professional contests scheduled for 12 rounds for the WBA championship, with Holyfield winning both times. The latter was the infamous disqualification finish due to Tyson biting his foe's ear.

Tyson Fury's recent comments have left many boxing fans concerned that the heavyweight unification superfight between he and Anthony Joshua may not be as imminent as others have implied.

Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn have claimed the bout will be finalised very shortly, with Fury's American promoter Bob Arum also saying there are no real hurdles remaining.

However Fury has been decidedly less enthusiastic about it happening in May or June, as predicted by Hearn earlier this year, and told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOmLDEaMZqk">IFL TV</a> he isn't even training right now.

He said: "Let’s break it down. Eddie Hearn is a boxing promoter. So is Bob Arum. It’s their job to sell a fight. Joshua is saying what he’s saying, I’m not on social media at the moment at all. So whatever they are saying is very unimportant to me.

"Until I’ve got a fight, a date and hell of a lot of money in my pocket, there is no fight. There’s a lot of things going on that people don’t know about behind the scenes that can scupper a fight like that.

"So nothing is actually on until you are in the ring. So yeah, we are nowhere near that at the moment.

"I can’t do nothing, it’s out of my hands. It is nothing to do with me at all. I’m just a boxer. There’s a lot of things like I say behind the scenes that can alter a fight.

"Do I think I’m going to be fighting Anthony Joshua in the next 10 minutes? No. Do I think the fight with Joshua will eventually happen sooner or later? Yes. It has to happen. But do I think it’s imminent, right next minute? No I don’t.

"I’ve stopped training now, I’m on holiday, I‘m doing anywhere between, eight, 10, 12 pints or lager a day at the minute. Not eating though so I’m getting my calories through alcohol. There’s nothing to do, is there?

"I’ve done training, training, training with no further process. It’s one of those things, at the minute I’m just chilling out, being a man of leisure in lockdown."

Roman Gonzalez and Juan Francisco lock horns one more time on Saturday night in a super flyweight title unification bout from the American Airlines Center in Dallas. 

They clashed in November 2012, with Gonzalez (50-2, 41 KOs) winning by unanimous decision to retain the WBA junior flyweight title. While both guys have gone on to have success since then, Gonzalez and Estrada both are known to modern-day boxing fans as all-action fighters.

"Chocolatito", the WBA champion, is excited to run it back with Estrada and feels it's going to be exactly what fans are hoping for. 
 
"Super happy and blessed by God, I'm ready for this fight," Gonzalez said at Thursday's press conference. "I know it will be a nice and elegant one.

"Juan Francisco is a very good champion. We know what we have to do and give a good fight. It is my dream to be WBC champion again. I have trained very hard. With the help of God and my team, we are going to make an excellent fight on Saturday. All of Nicaragua and Mexico are going to paralyze. May the best man win." 
 
For Estrada (41-3, 28 KOs), it's a chance to right a wrong. The WBC titlist knows what he did the first time around and promises they will bring fireworks, but this time the result will be different. 
 
"It's a fight we've been waiting for almost nine years, and we're not going to waste the opportunity," Estrada said at the same presser.

"Chocolatito is a great fighter, and may the best man win. I have waited a lot, I have three defeats, and I only need this one to go back to being undefeated. I am ready for this fight. No doubt it will be a better fight than the first one. It will be a war. Those who see the fight will be the winners. I come focused and motivated to win."

Cecilia Braekhus was on the verge of breaking the record for most consecutive title defenses set by Joe Louis heading into her fight with Jessica McCaskill in August.  
 
McCaskill had other plans in mind, defeating Braekhus by majority decision to hand "The First Lady" her first professional loss and becoming the undisputed women's welterweight champion. Not wanting to take an interim fight, Braekhus invoked her rematch clause and takes on McCaskill Saturday night from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, live on DAZN. 

Days before Braekhus (36-0, 9 KOs) attempts to reclaim her belts, she spoke to DAZN News about why she felt like she lost to McCaskill, feeling like she did enough to win, the rematch being the most personal contest of her career.

DAZN News: How excited are you at the opportunity to get the belts back?

Cecilia Braekhus: I'm very ready to get my belts back. I think on Saturday, I just want to right that wrong. I've been thinking about this since the last fight.

DN: When you look back at everything and you rewatch the fight, where do you feel things went wrong for you in August?

CB: I think it was more leading up to the fight. I was struggling a little bit with guilt. I had six months in Big Bear because of the pandemic. I was stuck there. My family and friends were all home. So as an athlete, you always will struggle a little bit with thoughts like that. But in this situation is very real and very emotional. Being that far away from home over such a long time, my head was not exactly in the right place, unfortunately. This is a completely different camp. I've been at Big Bear for seven weeks. I'm having fun boxing. I do what I love to do. I'm just happy. I'm looking forward to Saturday.

DN: A lot of fans base losses strictly on performance. Why do you think people don't take the mental side of things more seriously because the mental aspect, in all honesty, is more important than the physical attributes that you're bringing to the ring?

CB: Definitely. It's everything. I even have close friends who cannot understand totally what's going on, what we're doing, how intense it is, what kind of choices you have to make, and how hard these choices are. You never have the blueprint. Being an athlete is a tough profession.

DN: When you look at the first fight, it was a tale of two fights. It was Jessica's tempo, her aggression, in the first half of the fight, and in the latter half, you were able to come on at the end. Did you see the same things in the fight, or did you feel you had control the majority of the fight and you should have gotten the victory?

CB: I felt I did what I needed to do to keep my belt. I felt I edged it. It was a close fight. I felt I edged it. A lot of people thought it was a draw. Still, I think I shouldn't have lost my belts that night. I haven't focused on that. I'm just focusing forward on my task, my training, and what I'm supposed to do on Saturday.

DN: There were people after the fight that thought maybe you underestimated her just because of everything you've done because when she's gotten in the big fight, she hasn't been able to pull through. Is there anything to that where maybe you underestimated her just a little bit?

CB: No. I never underestimate my opponent. That's why I have been a champion for such a long time. It had nothing to do with that. It had nothing to do with her trash talk, which she and her coach were doing. All her lame mind games had nothing to do with anything. It was a very special situation for me. I dealt with a lot of other feelings and the situation at that time, which I have been free from now. It's a completely different situation.

DN: Going into your previous fights, it's always cordial, and everything's always very respectful. This time around, it seems like you guys have really been getting at each other, and you're both giving under each other's skin. Is this the most intense fight that you've ever had, as it seems like you two really just don't like each other too much?

CB: For me, I don't trash talk normally. It just doesn't interest me. But she's been trash-talking. It didn't even take 24 hours after our last fight before she started talking bad about me. She just needs to know that 'Okay, you and your lame trash talking, it's not going home here.' Otherwise, I don’t have to be interested to be in that, but if they can build up the fight then fine. Otherwise, I don't think about trash talking. That's not what I want to do in interviews. I don't have this strategy the way Jessica and Rick Ramos (McCaskill's head trainer) have about that because it's just miserable, and I don't want to be miserable.

DN: A lot was made going into the Claressa Shields fight last weekend, considering the struggle she had for anyone to pick up her fight, and her promoter put it on pay-per-view. Why do you think it's been such a struggle for women to get prominent spots in boxing to where you look at the women in the high profile positions like you, Jessica, and Claressa to get the credit that they do deserve when you're better than some of the males being put in prominent PPV positions?

CB: This is a good question. I think this is old habits in boxing that is so stuck (and) is so rooted. It was also pretty much established in amateur boxing too because it took over 100 years before women were allowed to do amateur boxing. I think it takes some time to turn it (around). I think it's good what's happening now. We definitely have a job to do. I think it's easier for UFC because it was new. There's a lot of people with very old views. There's a lot of people in boxing with very old views, and I think UFC, they're new (and) they didn't have that. They just promoted women the same way as the guys pretty quickly and you see the success they (have).

DN: How do you beat Jessica McCaskill and again become the undisputed women's welterweight champion?

CB: I just have to be me. Just box away. I box because I'm better than her. No doubt. I'm just more talented. I just need to go in the ring, and I just need to do my thing, and I will win because I'm better than her.

Maurice Hooker believes Vergil Ortiz Jr. is underestimating him ahead of their fight next weekend.

Speaking to the <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/home/ArticleId:11ng8cw0men1k1308juw9w4bqg" target="_blank">Ak & Barak Show on DAZN</a>, Hooker said he was happy to be fighting at 147lbs after previously fighting at lower weights and struggling, saying that at times, “I didn’t sit down because I didn’t want to get up,” given the strain of cutting.

Hooker trains with some of the best boxers at similar weights, including Jermell Charlo and Terence Crawford, which he believes helps spur him on improving.

"Everybody has been helping me push: Jermell, Crawford, all the coaches, they're always watching to make us work harder," Hooker said. "We're always in competition with each other. Who's going to finish first?"

Hooker betrayed no fear when talking about the prospect of fighting Ortiz, saying: "I said yes, they called me and told me. Let's do it. 

"I'm excited about this fight, my first fight at 147, big-name, up and coming."

However, Hooker wants to put Ortiz under examination after doubting some of his previous fights' quality.

"It's a good promoter, it's a good matchmaker to bring him up," he began. "But can he crack? I'm going to find out this week. He never seems to get hit. There's a lot about him I want to find out. We've never seen him take a shot. He's never fought anybody with power."

He believes he is the favourite going into the fight but can't afford to slack in the ring despite his advantages.

"My reach, my height, I'm bigger," he said. "I have all of the advantages, but it don't mean nothing if I don't use it. I've got to go in there and be smart, be me, and have fun with it."

The 31-year-old Texan believes that his younger rival, 11 years his junior, fails to keep his focus.

"He's overlooking me: dude, you've got a fight coming up," Hooker said.

British fighter Dillian Whyte has renewed his claims that Alexander Povetkin faked his bout of coronavirus.

Povetkin defeated Whyte in August 2020 in the finale of Matchroom’s Fight Camp summer series during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Fights were held at their Brentwood HQ with the ring situated outside to comply with Covid-19 restrictions.

The Russian delivered a surprise knockout blow after being sent to the canvas twice himself, and Whyte immediately decided to exercise his rematch clause.

A first date was set for November and then January, but Povetkin suffered from an extended bout of coronavirus which has seen the fight moved back to March 27, to take place in Gibraltar. <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/home/ArticleId:qjt0tws9ry0x1elej5ttezqh8">The fight will be shown on DAZN</a> in some regions.

Whyte told <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/14296978/dillian-whyte-anthony-joshua-tyson-fury/" target="_blank">The Sun</a> that he thinks that Povetkin’s claims over his coronavirus infection was merely a way to get more time to prepare for any fight.

“He never had COVID,” Whyte said. “He just wanted more time to train or prepare.

“You don’t recover from coronavirus overnight like that, it was some sort of miracle recovery. But this is boxing and I am used to all the games and tricks.

“For someone that has had COVID, he has looked in photos better than I have ever seen him look before! I’m not sure someone coming off their sickbed would look that good. Thankfully the fight is now on, there are no more delays and we are ready to rock.”

Claressa Shields hopes that a fight with Savannah Marshall could help close the gender pay gap, her advisor claims.

Shields is unbeaten after 11 professional fights, with her last defeat coming to Marshall when the pair of them were both amateurs, leading for a desire to settle the scores in a rematch.

Marshall has not lost in nine fights, and is the current WBO middleweight belt holder. Shields’ advisor Mark Taffet said that he wants promoters and networks to come together to help give significant sums to the fighters.

The American fighter has previously said that she favours changing women’s boxing from two-minute rounds to three-minute rounds to bring parity with the men’s discipline, in order to negate the arguments against paying women in boxing more for their efforts.
