The 2024 NFL Draft is just ten days away and just about every mock draft has quarterbacks going with the first three picks.
While Caleb Williams is the big favourite to go first overall to the Chicago Bears, numbers two and three are harder to call, with Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye believed to be battling it out for the number two pick.
Here’s a closer look at former North Carolina signal-caller Maye.
Background and college career
Hailing from Huntersville, North Carolina, Maye’s high school career began at William A. Hough High School, before he transferred to Charlotte’s Myers Park High School after his freshman year. After initially committing to Alabama, he would then choose to remain in North Carolina to play for the Tar Heels.
He would win the starting job as a sophomore and broke the Tar Heels' single-season passing yards record. While he didn’t quite hit the same heights in 2023, he would declare for the 2024 draft after finishing his college career with more than 8,000 yards and 63 passing touchdowns.
What sort of player is he?
Maye has prototypical size and strength so should have no issues adapting physically to the NFL. His big arm will win him many admirers and he can move well when needed, although there are fears that he can try and force plays and look to do too much while under pressure.
Where is he likely to be drafted?
A top-three selection looks likely. Could the Patriots look to install him as the new regime’s franchise quarterback with their number three pick? Or perhaps we could see someone like the Vikings trade up for him?
