Yet another NFL team looks to be targeting a quarterback in next month’s draft.
This year’s batch of NFL hopefuls looks to be one of the strongest QB drafts in recent years, with some pundits predicting that up to six signal-callers could go in the first round alone.
The first three picks at least look near-certainties to be quarterbacks, with Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels expected to quickly move off the board, with Chicago, Washington and New England currently holding the first three picks and all needing a new QB.
But a second wave of quarterback selections could quickly follow. Minnesota (who have the 11th pick) have stockpiled another first-round pick which gives them ammunition to move up, while the Denver Broncos (who have pick number twelve) have also said they will be looking to land a new QB.
And you can add the New York Giants to the list of those teams potentially looking at taking a swing on the opening night in Detroit on Thursday, April 25.
With his side possessing the number six pick, owner John Mara was asked about the situation at the annual meeting on Monday.
"If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it's worth pick No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that," he said as per ESPN.
"I know they're looking at the quarterbacks. You've seen that," he added. "They've gone to some of the pro day, we've had some of those guys in. I don't think they're even close to making a final determination yet as to which way we're going to go on that. Those discussions will happen over the next few weeks."
The likes of J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix are all being touted as other potential first-round selections.
This comes just 12 months after Daniel Jones was signed to a $160million, four-year deal. Jones tore his ACL in the Giants’ sixth game last season, after an underwhelming start to the campaign in which they won just one of Jones’ six starts.
Mara insisted drafting a quarterback would not mark the end of Jones’ Giants career.
"No, I don't think so," he continued. "Why not let them both compete? Let them both compete and let the better man win."
