To add insult to injury, two Baltimore Ravens stars have been handed fines for their behaviour in their 17-10 AFC Championship loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Ravens, who were the favourites going into the game, struggled on offense against a resolute Chiefs defense and failed to score a single point in the second half at M&T Bank Stadium.
Kansas City had their struggles on offense too, but errors on both sides of the ball at crucial moments in the game cost the Ravens.
And two of those errors were senseless penalties which have now resulted in both players being fined for their actions, the NFL announced late on Saturday.
The heaviest of the two fines is for wide receiver Zay Flowers, who showed his ability in the first half with a brilliant touchdown before turning into the villain late on.
Late in the third quarter with the Ravens struggling to find anything on offense, hopes were reignited when Flowers caught a 54-yard catch down to the Chiefs 10-yard line.
But after Chiefs corner L'Jarius Sneed grabbed at Flowers' leg at the end of the play, the rookie threw the ball to Sneed's side while flexing over him to draw a 15-yard penalty for taunting.
And if fumbling the ball at the goal-line when reaching out to score just four plays later was not bad enough for Flowers, he has now been handed a $10,927 fine for his behaviour.
The other fine, of $6,700, has been handed to defensive tackle Travis Jones for a late hit in the second quarter on Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Baltimore said ahead of the match they were not willing to let Mahomes have an easy day, but hits like Jones put on the former MVP only helped to move the chains all evening for Kansas City.
Flowers, Jones and the Ravens will now have to watch from home as the Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl next Sunday.
