Caleb Williams managed to avoid losing in his first NFL start, making him the first quarterback drafted No. 1 overall to win on his debut since 2002.

Williams and the Chicago Bears weathered an early storm on Sunday to defeat the visiting Tennessee Titans 24-17, reversing a trend that has seen QBs selected first overall go 0-14-1 since David Carr led the then-expansion Houston Texans to victory in his debut 22 years ago.

While it wasn't a particularly noteworthy game for Williams in terms of personal stats, with the 22-year-old throwing for 92 yards on 14-29 passing, the Bears turned the tables on the Titans after a quick start by the visitors. Chicago's defence forced three sacks and two interceptions against Tennessee pivot Will Levis, and Bears safety Jonathan Owens scored his team's first touchdown of the season following a blocked punt.

Williams will likely have better games as the weeks roll on, but on Sunday his team ensured that he made his first bit of NFL history.
