One of the biggest questions ahead of the 2024 NFL preseason is whether or not the Chicago Bears’ number one overall draft pick Caleb Williams will meet the hype.
The former USC quarterback was considered one of the best prospects in recent years when he entered this year’s NFL Draft, with the Bears wasting no time in making him the very first selection.
The Bears kick off the NFL’s preseason on Thursday evening when they take on the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame Game, but fans will have to wait a while longer to see Williams in action.
That’s because Chicago head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed on Tuesday that his new quarterback will not be taking to the field in Canton, Ohio, as the coach has decided not to play any of his starters, as per the NFL Network .
This comes despite Williams saying he ‘would love to get out there and play’ this week, but the decision is not a massive surprise, considering that historically teams have tended to rest their starters in this extra preseason contest.
That means the likes of Tyson Bagent, Brett Rypien, and Austin Reed will be vying for snaps at the quarterback position, as other back-ups and fringe players look to boost their chances of making the team’s final 53-man roster next month.
The Bears’ second preseason contest will be at the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, August 10, with Eberflus yet to confirm if his starters will be involved in that clash.
