The Chicago Bears have tied up the future of one of their key offensive pieces on the eve of the NFL preseason.
The NFC North side will kick off the NFL’s preseason slate of matches on Thursday evening when they take on the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame Game buoyed by the news that wide receiver D.J. Moore has put pen to paper on a four-year extension that is worth up to $110million, with $82.6million in guaranteed money.
That means Moore will average $27.5million across the four years of his deal, to put him seventh among the league’s wide receivers and sees the 2018 first-round draft pick rewarded for an excellent 2023 campaign which saw him haul in 96 receptions for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns, all career highs.
This move comes a year after the Bears obtained Moore as part of a trade with Carolina that led to the Panthers selecting quarterback Bryce Young with the first overall selection of the 2023 draft. This deal also saw the Bears receive Carolina’s first overall pick in this year’s draft, which saw them take quarterback Caleb Williams.
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus will now be hoping that his new rookie QB will quickly be able to build a rapport with Moore, with the new signal caller able to draw on a talented wide receiver room that also includes veteran Keenan Allen and fellow 2024 first-round draft pick Rome Odunze.
Moore’s contract extension is the latest in a series of big-money deals handed out to wide receivers in the NFL this offseason, with the likes of the Vikings’ Justin Jefferson, the Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown and A.J. Brown of the Eagles all signing new deals, with the Cowboys CeeDee Lamb, the Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase and the 49ers Brandon Aiyuk all hoping to be next in the queue.
