The San Francisco 49ers have snapped up free agent quarterback Josh Dobbs on a one-year deal.

Journeyman QB Dobbs found himself in the spotlight last season when he started 12 games for the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings, eclipsing the two previous career starts he had managed during his seven-year career.

While he would win only three of these matches as he stood in for the injured Kyler Murray and Kirk Cousins respectively, the media quickly picked up on the fact he has a degree in aerospace engineering and handed him the brilliant nickname of ‘The Passtronaut.’

Dobbs has had two offseason internships at NASA’s Kennedy Space Flight Center as part of the NFLPA’s Virtual Externship Program, but the perennial backup’s career has really taken flight in the past 12 months and he now finds himself fighting for a spot on the roster of a Super Bowl contender.

Dobbs’ deal includes $2.25million in guaranteed money as he looks to nail down the backup job behind Brock Purdy after the 49ers saw Sam Darnold leave for Minnesota in free agency last week.

His signing comes after the 49ers, who lost Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime last month, signed quarterback Brandon Allen to a new one-year deal last year as Mike Shanahan’s QB room looks to be set ahead of next month’s draft.
