The Kansas City Chiefs have received a huge boost to their offense ahead of their season opener against the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid have been hard at work during the offseason as they prepare to win a third Vince Lombardi trophy in five seasons, but it has not been smooth sailing for the Chiefs with wide receiver Kadarius Toney picking up a knee injury.
Toney has been sidelined throughout the offseason after sustaining the injury in the early stages of training camp, but now it looks like the 2021 NFL Draft pick could be ready for the clash with the Lions at Arrowhead.
Speaking to CBS Sports ahead of Thursday's game, Reid gave a positive update on Toney's fitness.
"Right now, he's good to go," Reid said. "He's moving around pretty good."
Toney is listed as a starting receiver for the Chiefs in the depth chart on the team's website giving another indication that he is ready to play and will likely be a primary target for Mahomes who had nothing but praise for the 24-year-old and his attitude during the recovery process.
“The talent that he has, the competitor that he is to be able to go out there and have that weapon, would definitely be a huge positive,” Mahomes told reporters.
“He’s done a great job and the practices that he’s been in so far.
"I’m looking forward to him continuing to step up and be even better and be more like his normal self, which I mean, honestly, going out there the first day and first few days and seeing him, he looks like KT (Kadarius Toney) and so I’m excited for that.
"He put a lot of time in that rehab process so that he can get himself ready, hopefully, to play in this first week.”
