    The Super Bowl has been the final game of the NFL season since 1966, in the sport's post-merger era, but has not always been a fixture in the second month of the year.

    For the best part of four decades, it was held in January, initially in the first few weeks until 1978, and then in the latter stages of the month between 1979 and 2003.

    When did the Super Bowl start being played in February? 

    The Super Bowl was first played in February in 2004, held on the first day of the month, for the XXXVIII edition of the game, between the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers.

    It was held on the first Sunday of the month until 2021, when it subsequently moved to 2022 in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic with Super Bowl LVI.
