It was hardly the prettiest of games, but the Indianapolis Colts did what they needed to do to defeat the New England Patriots on Sunday and return to .500.
The game was played in Frankfurt as the NFL's second Germany-based game of the season, but unlike last week's thriller between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins at Deutsche Bank Park, Sunday's contest was more about which side could make fewer mistakes rather than being a well-executed football game.
Interestingly, both teams scored on their opening drives, with the Patriots kicking a field goal before the Colts grabbed the lead with a Jonathan Taylor touchdown. Indianapolis would not relinquish the lead once they had it, and the Colts' defense smothered Pats quarterback Mac Jones with five sacks and an interception. Backup QB Bailey Zappe, who replaced Jones in the fourth quarter, threw an interception of his own as the Patriots desperately looked to score in the games dying seconds.
In the end, Indy did just enough to claim victory, and the team will return to the U.S. with a 5-5 record. The Pats fall to 2-8.
