Patrick Mahomes is aiming to win his third Super Bowl ring when his side take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Patrick Mahomes will be looking to win a third Super Bowl ring in five years when he leads his Kansas City Chiefs side into battle against the San Francisco 49ers.

Andy Reid’s team is approaching dynasty territory and a win in Las Vegas would mean the Chiefs will have a strong case for being the ‘team of the 2020s’ and put them alongside the era-defining teams of the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots.

Mahomes is rated by many as the best player in the sport, having taken that mantle on from Tom Brady, the player who has more Super Bowl rings than any other.

Brady hung up his cleats after winning seven rings during his storied 23-year career with New England and then Tampa Bay, a record that few thought could ever be matched.

Should Mahomes see off the 49ers this weekend though, that would put him on three Super Bowl wins, seven years into his career - the same number that Brady has clocked up at that point.

It is little surprise then, that the issue of Mahomes potentially catching Brady up was a subject of discussion during Monday night’s Super Bowl LVIII Opening Night.

"I mean, I'm not even close to halfway, so I haven't put a lot of thought into it," Mahomes said, as per NFL Network. "I mean, your goal is to be the best player that you can be. I know I'm blessed to be around a lot of great players around me. And so, right now, it's doing whatever I can to beat a great 49ers team and try to get that third ring. And then if you ask me that question in 15 years, and I'll see if I can get close to seven. But seven seems like a long ways away still."

Brady’s longevity was one of the factors that separated him from his peers and Mahomes is hoping he too can extend his career.

"That's the goal, you want to play as long as they'll let you play," Mahomes added. "It takes a lot of work outside of the building. It takes taking care of your body, it takes eating healthy and try to get rid of the dad bod that I got. But try to do whatever you can just to get healthy and go out there and be the best player that you can be.

"My hope is to take it year in and year out, but I want to play as long as they'll let me play. Fifteen years seems like long, but Brady did it and some other guys have done it so, I'm going to strive to see if I can do it as well."
