Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is the latest talent to earn the title of 'highest-paid player in NFL history' after agreeing to a five-year contract extension.
The deal is worth $262.5 million, meaning the total value and the $52.5 million average per season exceedes the $260 million five-year extension Lamar Jackson signed with the Baltimore Ravens three months ago.
However, Herbert's $218.7 million guaranteed will be second to the fully guaranteed $230 million deal DeShaun Watson signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2022.
Since joining the Chargers as the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Herbert has gone from strength to strength, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2021 and in 49 starts completing 1,316 passes for 14,089 yards, the most through a player's first three seasons in NFL history.
