Lambeau Field - Did You Know?

Lambeau Field - Did You Know?Green Bay Packers

Lambeau Field is one of the most iconic stadiums in the NFL, steeped in history and tradition. Home to the Green Bay Packers since 1957, it’s a bucket-list destination for football fans.

But how much do you really know about this legendary venue? As Lambeau Field prepares to play host to the Monday Night Football clash between the Saints and the Packers, here are some fascinating facts about it:

It wasn't always called Lambeau Field

When the stadium opened in 1957, it was known as (New) City Stadium, replacing the Packers' original field of the same name. It was renamed Lambeau Field in 1965 to honour Earl 'Curly' Lambeau, the Packers' founder, player, and first head coach.

The 'Frozen Tundra' nickname wasn't local

Lambeau Field is famously called the 'Frozen Tundra,' but that nickname didn't come from Green Bay. It originated from a 1967 NFL Championship Game also known as the 'Ice Bowl', which was broadcast by CBS. Temperatures during that game dropped to -13°F (-25°C), with a wind chill of -48°F, earning it a reputation as one of the coldest games in NFL history.

It’s the oldest stadium in continuous use in the NFL

While several other stadiums have come and gone, Lambeau Field has remained the Packers' home for more than 65 years. Thanks to numerous renovations and expansions, it has kept pace with modern amenities while retaining its historic charm.

The stadium has a massive fan waiting list

Becoming a Packers season ticket holder isn’t easy. The waiting list is so long — it has over 140,000 names — that it’s estimated to take 30-40 years to get your turn. Some families pass down their spot on the list through generations!

The Packers Hall of Fame is on-site

Lambeau Field houses the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame, a 15,000-square-foot tribute to the team’s storied history. Fans can explore interactive exhibits, view championship trophies, and learn about legendary players like Bart Starr, Brett Favre, and Aaron Rodgers.

A $295 million renovation expanded its legacy

In 2003, Lambeau Field underwent a massive renovation project to modernize the stadium. It added new concourses, suites, and seating, increasing its capacity to 72,515. Since then, capacity has increased again to 81,441, making it one of the largest stadiums in the league.

Lambeau leaps are a beloved tradition

The 'Lambeau Leap' is one of the most famous touchdown celebrations in the NFL. Invented by Packers safety LeRoy Butler in 1993, it involves players jumping into the stands to celebrate with fans. The tradition has become a quintessential part of Lambeau Field lore.

It’s home to the only community-owned team

The Packers are the only publicly owned, non-profit major league professional sports team in the U.S., with over 537,000 shareholders. Lambeau Field symbolizes this unique community connection, making it a sacred place for fans.

It hosts more than football

While it’s best known for NFL games, Lambeau Field has hosted a variety of events, including college football games, concerts by artists like Paul McCartney and Kenny Chesney, and even weddings on the field.

It’s built for all seasons

Despite its reputation for brutal winters, Lambeau Field's turf is heated! A system of underground coils keeps the grass from freezing, ensuring games can continue even in frigid conditions - like those which are expected for the New Orleans Saints' visit on Monday.
