New York Giants' star running back Saquon Barkley has agreed a new one-year deal with the franchise worth up to $11m.

Running backs across the NFL have been campaigning for the position to be better paid due to the physical strain on their bodies.

Barkley, and Las Vegas Raiders' Josh Jacobs, had been two such players threatening to hold out of training camp until their contract situation had been resolved.

Both Barkley and Jacobs had been franchise-tagged by their respective teams, a system which binds the player to a team for an extra year with a non-negotiable salary based on the average at the position or the player's previous contract.

Barkley had missed the mid-July deadline to sign a new long-term deal with the Giants, but the team and player have now agreed to a rare one-year deal different in value to the franchise tag.

It is not a long-term solution for the Giants, but for 2023 at least Barkley will be a part of the offense as they try and build on an improved showing in 2022.

According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, Barkley will be given a $2m signing bonus, and leaves Jacobs as the only franchise tagged running back who is still holding out.
