It may be harder for teams to avoid the preseason documentary.

The NFL could be set to vote on new rules regarding participation in the preseason fly-on-the-wall documentary series Hard Knocks.

First aired in 2001, Hard Knocks has become a staple of NFL fans’ preseason diets as it features a behind-the-scenes look at a team’s training camp.

The NFL has a number of criteria for selecting which team appears each year that sees the majority of the league exempt.

As things stand, a team with a first-year head coach, teams that have made the playoffs in either of the past two seasons and teams that have featured in Hard Knocks in the past ten years are exempt from appearing on the show.

Now, according to the Sport Business Journal, the league is looking to have owners vote on Tuesday in order to widen the pool of available teams.

They are looking to scrap the playoff exemption, reduce the ten years since a team’s last appearance to eight and to exclude those who participate in the in-season version of Hard Knocks in the current or next season.

The 2023 series featured the New York Jets following their signing of Aaron Rodgers, but this was the first year in which the team that was chosen did not want to do the series, with only the Jets, Commanders, Bears and Saints eligible.
