NFL stars we lost in 2024: remembering their lives and legacies (part two)
As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on a year filled with unforgettable NFL moments but also the sorrow of bidding farewell to some of the league's legends.
These players left an indelible mark on the game and their fans. Let’s take a moment to celebrate their lives and achievements, remembering the stars who are no longer with us. Read part one here.
Larry Allen (1971–2024)
A dominant offensive lineman, Allen’s 14-year career included a Super Bowl XXX victory and 11 Pro Bowl selections.
His strength and agility made him one of the most feared linemen in NFL history.
Monte Kiffin (1940–2024)
An innovative defensive coordinator, Kiffin pioneered the Tampa 2 defence, which became a staple of NFL strategy.
His work with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Super Bowl-winning team in 2002 cemented his legacy.
Jacoby Jones (1984–2024)
A dynamic wide receiver and return specialist, Jones’ contributions to the Baltimore Ravens' Super Bowl XLVII victory, including a 108-yard kick-off return, are etched in NFL history.
Abner Haynes (1937–2024)
A trailblazing running back in the AFL, Haynes was a 3× All-Star and led the Dallas Texans to a championship in 1962. He was known for his versatility and leadership. Off the field Haynes was a champion for civil rights, using his platform to advocate for equality in sports.
Joe Schmidt (1932–2024)
A 10× Pro Bowler and 2× NFL champion with the Detroit Lions, Schmidt’s leadership on and off the field made him one of the league’s most respected linebackers.
Mercury Morris (1947–2024)
A key member of the Miami Dolphins' undefeated 1972 team, Morris’ explosive runs, and electric personality made him a fan favourite. Off the field Morris advocated for player wellness and remained a vocal presence in the NFL alumni community.
Billy Shaw (1939–2024)
A Hall of Fame guard, Shaw was a cornerstone of the Buffalo Bills’ AFL dominance in the 1960s.
He was the first player who spent his entire career in the AFL to be enshrined in Canton.
Greg Landry (1946–2024)
A dual-threat quarterback, Landry’s tenure with the Detroit Lions included a Pro Bowl selection and memorable performances as a leader both on the field and in the locker room.
Pat Fischer (1940–2024)
A tenacious cornerback despite his smaller stature, Fischer’s 17-year career included three Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl appearance with Washington. After the game his work as a financial advisor helped former players transition to life after football.
William "Dub" Jones (1924–2024)
A versatile halfback and flanker, Jones was part of the Cleveland Browns' dominance in the 1950s.
He’s remembered for scoring six touchdowns in a single game, a record that still stands. His son, Bert Jones, became an NFL quarterback.
Bill Bergey (1945–2024)
A dominant linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, Bergey was a 5× Pro Bowler known for his intensity and leadership on defence.
