It is amazing how far sport has come in a short space of time.
In the modern era, if you win the Heisman Trophy, you are probably set for life. However, back in 1944, this was not the case.
This is the story of quarterback Les Horvath, who, on this day in 1944, was awarded the Heisman Trophy after a phenomenal season with Ohio State.
Lowly beginnings
Unlike most modern Heisman winners, Horvath did not go to college on a football scholarship. He enrolled with the intention of studying dentistry and in his first year, 1939, he did not even play football.
He tried out for the team the next year and made the squad as a reserve halfback. In 1942, Ohio State won their first-ever national championship and Horvath graduated, moving to the state’s dental school.
War changes lives
War almost inevitably changes lives, and by now the USA were fully embroiled in World War Two. As a result, a rule had been passed which allowed graduate students with remaining eligibility to continue playing for their schools.
Horvath qualified and was invited back to Ohio State by coach Carroll Widdoes in 1944. Stepping into the role of starting quarterback, Horvath was unstoppable as Ohio ended the season with a 9-0 record.
Horvath was named an All-American at the end of the season and won the Heisman Trophy.
Turning Pro
After graduating from dental school, Horvath worked as a military dentist for two years, looking after the teeth of the U.S. navy. When the war ended, he was discharged and he returned to football, signing for the LA Rams and then the Cleveland Browns.
He never quite recaptured the glory of his stellar college season though. He retired in 1950 and returned to practicing dentistry in Los Angeles.
What is the Heisman Trophy?
Awarded annually to the most outstanding player in U.S. college football, the Heisman Trophy recognises exceptional skill, leadership, and performance.
Established in 1935, it is one of the most prestigious awards in American sports. Winners are often pivotal figures in their teams and frequently transition to successful professional careers in the NFL.
Notable winners include Barry Sanders (1988), known for his electrifying running style, and Joe Burrow (2019), who set records during LSU’s championship-winning season.
