The Philadelphia Eagles will be hoping that the age-old saying that offense wins games but defense wins championships rings true after Vic Fangio’s unit turned the screw on the Kansas City Chiefs in the second quarter of Super Bowl LIX.
After managing to contain Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs offense in the opening period, the Eagles stunned their opponents mid-way through the second quarter when they sacked Mahomes on consecutive plays to set up a third-and-long.
It then got worse for Mahomes, who was picked off by Cooper Dejean who returned the catch 38 yards for a touchdown, capping what is likely to be the three worst consecutive plays of the Chiefs QB's career.
The interception was the first of rookie Dejean’s NFL career, with the Eagles cornerback also becoming the first player in NFL history to score a touchdown on his birthday. The Super Bowl also fell on Saquon Barkley's birthday, but the Philadelphia running back had a quiet first half.
The score saw the Eagles take a 17-0 lead, following Jalen Hurt’s one-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter and a 48-yard Jake Elliott field goal. Mahomes' woes continued as he would throw another first-half interception, deep in his own territory, that would lead to an AJ Brown touchdown and a 24-0 Philadelphia lead.
