The Detroit Lions are back in the NFC Championship Game after more than three decades.
Detroit defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23 at a raucous Ford Field on Sunday, although celebrations were put on hold until the fourth quarter as the teams were evenly matched through the first 45 minutes of action.
The fourth quarter opened with the teams tied 17-17, as the Bucs seemed to have an answer for everything their hosts threw at them. However, the Lions saved their best for last as they scored early in the final frame and then went up by a pair of touchdowns with 6:22 remaining, putting the game out of reach.
That didn't deter the Buccaneers, who used a Baker Mayfield-Mike Evans connection to pull to within a single possession with 4:37 left in the game, but an interception by the Lions' Derrick Barnes with just 1:39 on the clock officially put an end to any thoughts of a Bucs comeback, sending Detroit to the conference championship.
The Lions will travel to California next week to face the San Francisco 49ers for a berth in the Super Bowl.
