An early look at the quarterbacks entering the final year of their current contracts

The first wave of free agency is in the books and we have seen plenty of wheeling and dealing over the past fortnight.

Players have moved teams, others have signed lucrative new deals and trades have been made as franchises look to improve their rosters for the 2024 season.

But while free agency is all about the here and now, the best teams will plan for the future and have an eye on next year’s potential market.

Here is a look at the big-name quarterbacks who are about to enter the final years of their current deals and - as things stand - would be on the market next March.

Dak Prescott - Dallas Cowboys

It would be a huge shock if the Dallas Cowboys do not agree a contract extension with their franchise quarterback before the new season starts. Prescott is coming off a strong 2023 season in which he was in the MVP race until the final stretch and at age 31, he should still have plenty in the tank.

With QB extensions working the way they do, expect him to sign a record-breaking deal that will be broken when the next big quarterback extension comes along.

Tua Tagovailoa - Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins QB is about to enter the final year of his rookie deal, meaning Miami must make their mind up on whether or not to pull the trigger on a big-money extension. With Tagovailoa ingrained in Mike McDaniel’s specific type of offensive play that requires timing, accuracy and speed, the Dolphins are likely to soon begin talks on a new deal.

Jordan Love - Green Bay Packers

Another franchise QB who should be handed a market-setting deal at some point before his current deal ends after the 2024 season. Love’s first season as an NFL starter saw him emerge as the latest in the Packers’ line of talented quarterbacks.

Jared Goff - Detroit Lions

After sometimes suffering under the weight of expectation at the Rams following his number one draft selection in 2016, Goff has found a home in Detroit and with the franchise coming off their best season in a generation, they will not want to let their quarterback hit the open market next March.

Best of the rest

Outside of the four nailed-on starters above, several quarterbacks signed one-year deals this offseason and will be looking to impress this year. Russell Wilson is looking to rebuild his career in Pittsburgh, while Sam Darnold is likely to be in competition with a rookie in Minnesota and Drew Lock will hope to usurp Daniel Jones at the Giants.
