It's known as the greatest show on turf, but not all Super Bowls are equal.
While the thrill of winning the championship is universal, some games are simply more memorable than others. Whether it's because of a mind-blowing play, a controversial call, or a legend calling time on his career, there are varied reasons why some Super Bowl games tend to stand out from the rest.
With 55 editions already in the books, there are a lot of great moments written in the history books. On the eve of Super Bowl 56 in Los Angeles, DAZN News looks back at the top five games of all time.
5. Super Bowl 13: Pittsburgh Steelers 35, Dallas Cowboys 31
A true clash of titans, 1979's Super Bowl 13 ran the gamut. The game started as a close contest before turning into a Steelers rout, which spurred on a furious 18-point Dallas comeback that ultimately fell short.
This was the first rematch in Super Bowl history, with Pittsburgh once again coming out on top.
4. Super Bowl 23: San Francisco 49ers 20, Cincinnati Bengals 16
The most memorable games are usually the ones with dramatic endings, and there are few better than the finish to the 1989 edition.
Led by superstar quarterback Joe Montana, the 49ers put together an 11-play, 92-yard drive to the end zone to snatch a comeback victory and ensure the Niners' place as one of the all-time great teams.
This was also the last time the Bengals have appeared in the Super Bowl, and they'll look to be on the winning side when they finally return to the championship game on Sunday.
3. Super Bowl 25: New York Giants 20, Buffalo Bills 19
"Wide right."
An incredibly tight game boiled down to the last kick of the game, with Bills kicker Scott Norwood stepping up to try and win the Super Bowl for his team. Instead, Norwood's effort drifted just past the uprights, cementing a one-point victory for the underdog Giants.
If this play doen't convince you that the early '90s Bills were cursed, nothing will.
2. Super Bowl 42: New York Giants 17, New England Patriots 14
Tom Brady is regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever step on the field in large part because of his unmatched success in Super Bowl games.
Things were shaping up nicely for Brady to add another chapter to his growing legend in 2008, when he led the Patriots to a perfect regular season and was just a Super Bowl win over the Giants away from completing the best campaign in history.
Instead, New York employed an incredible defensive scheme to limit Brady's effectiveness, and one of the most unbelieveable catches ever seen — the "Helmet Catch" — punctuated the massive upset.
1. Super Bowl 51: New England Patriots 34, Atlanta Falcons 28 (OT)
The game that became a meme, the 2017 title contest solidified the New England Patriots of the 2010s as a team of destiny.
Facing a massive deficit, Brady and the Pats engineered arguably the greatest comeback of all time against a Falcons team that, pardon the pun, came out flying. Atlanta built up a 21-0 lead, later increasing the margin to 28-3 at the 2:12 mark of the third quarter.
At that point it seemed assured that the Falcons would cruise to their first championship, but the Pats of that era were just built different. Led by Brady, wide receiver Julian Edelman and running back James White, the Patriots proceeded to mount a historic comeback, scoring 31 straight points to secure the team's fifth Super Bowl victory.
