A Lion, a Cardinal and a Packer - uncovering the five oldest teams in the NFLDAZN

The NFL's rich history is built on the legacies of its oldest franchises, teams that helped shape the league into the powerhouse it is today.

From humble beginnings in the early 20th century, these teams have amassed iconic players, storied rivalries, and countless titles. Here’s a look at the five oldest teams in the NFL and what makes them legendary.

Arizona Cardinals (Established 1920)

The Cardinals, originally founded as the Racine Cardinals in Chicago, are the oldest continuously operating professional football team in the United States. They joined the NFL as a charter member in 1920. After stints in Chicago, St. Louis, and Phoenix, they settled in Arizona.

Titles Won: The Cardinals have won two NFL championships, in 1925 and 1947. However, a Super Bowl victory has eluded them.

Marquee Players: Legends like Larry Fitzgerald, Pat Tillman, and Dan Dierdorf have donned the Cardinals' uniform.

Notable Moments: Their Super Bowl XLIII appearance in 2009 against the Pittsburgh Steelers remains one of the franchise's high points, despite losing the game.

Chicago Bears (Established 1920)

Initially called the Decatur Staleys, the Bears are one of the league’s most storied franchises. They moved to Chicago in 1921 and adopted their current name a year later.

Titles Won: The Bears boast nine NFL championships, including one Super Bowl victory (1985).

Marquee Players: Walter Payton, Mike Ditka, and Dick Butkus are just a few of the legends associated with the Bears.

Notable Moments: The 1985 season remains iconic, featuring a dominant defence led by coordinator Buddy Ryan and a colourful Super Bowl Shuffle.

Green Bay Packers (Established 1921)

The Packers are the NFL's only community-owned franchise and hold a special place in league history. Founded by Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Calhoun, they remain based in the small Wisconsin city of Green Bay.

Titles Won: The Packers are the most successful NFL franchise, with 13 championships, including four Super Bowl victories.

Marquee Players: Bart Starr, Brett Favre, and Aaron Rodgers are among the greats.

Notable Moments: Their dominance in the 1960s under coach Vince Lombardi cemented their status, with the first two Super Bowls bearing his name.

New York Giants (Established 1925)

One of the league's most consistent franchises, the Giants were founded to bring professional football to New York City.

Titles Won: The Giants have won eight championships, including four Super Bowls.

Marquee Players: Lawrence Taylor, Eli Manning, and Frank Gifford are key figures in the Giants’ history.

Notable Moments: Their 2007 and 2011 Super Bowl victories over the heavily favoured New England Patriots are legendary underdog triumphs.

Detroit Lions (Established 1930)

Initially founded as the Portsmouth Spartans, the team moved to Detroit in 1934 and became the Lions.

Titles Won: The Lions have won four NFL championships, but their last came in 1957, long before the Super Bowl era.

Marquee Players: Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson are two of the greatest to ever play for Detroit.

Notable Moments: Though recent years have seen struggles, Thanksgiving Day games have become a cherished tradition for the Lions and their fans.
