The Commanders have the first big decision to make in this year’s NFL Draft.

The new regime in Washington has the second overall selection in this year’s draft and with it, the first real big decision of the opening night.

With Caleb Williams set to go first, the Commanders look set to choose between two quarterbacks, but with nine selections that include six in the top 100, their weekend in Detroit isn’t only about their first selection.

Here’s what to look out for when Washington make their picks this week.

Washington Commanders draft picks

  • No. 2 overall (first round)
  • No. 36 overall (second round)
  • No. 40 overall (second round) (from Chicago)
  • No. 67 overall (third round)
  • No. 78 overall (third round) (from Seattle)
  • No. 100 overall (third round) (from San Francisco)
  • No. 139 overall (fifth round)
  • No. 152 overall (fifth round) (from Seattle)
  • No. 225 overall (seventh round)

Key Needs

Aside from the obvious need at quarterback, the Commanders have several positions to address following last’s 4-13 record.

An impactful edge rusher is needed, along with help at cornerback. On offense, more depth on the line is required, while a reliable, physical wide receiver would aid their rookie QB’s adaptation to the NFL, as would an effective tight end.

Predictions

Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels? That’s the first decision to make and we’ll guess they go with Daniels, who will give the team more of an x-factor than Maye.

In the second round, the offensive line gets some attention, where a player like Tyler Guyton could still be around. With their second pick in the second round, they could also spring for a wide receiver, given how deep the position groups is this year.

Given how many picks they have in the top 100, the Commanders can also look to add a pass rusher and cornerback before turning their attention to the best players available on day three.
