The running back (RB) is a position which can take a toll physically, but it's an essential role if an NFL team is daring to be great.
But while running with the ball looks a simple skill on the surface, a RB can serve a number of different purposes and therefore those in the position need to be versatile.
DAZN explains everything fans need to know about a running back in an NFL team.
What is a running back in the NFL?
A running back is a member of the offense who can run with the ball and also catch passes thrown by the quarterback.
Depending on the design of the play and position on the field, a RB can also be labelled as a halfback, tailback or fullback.
What are the responsibilities of a running back?
The responsibilities of a running back can vary as a result of the play design.
Passing Plays
During a passing play, a RB will be looking to get open for a pass thrown by the quarterback.
A RB may also be used to block on passing plays to give the quarterback extra time to throw a pass.
Running Plays
On a running play the RB will receive the ball in a handoff from the quarterback and will run downfield in an attempt to gain as many yards as possible.
