Former four-division world champion Adrien Broner makes his return to the ring after a 25-month layoff to face the unknown Jovanie Santiago on Saturday from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn.
The last time Broner competed was back in January 2019, losing a lopsided decision to Manny Pacquiao. Since then, Broner hasn't been able to keep himself out of the headlines but for all the wrong reasons.
Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs) was arrested for DUI in Florida back in March, which led to him having to serve seven days in jail in August due to a probation violation for a 2018 arrest for "gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony, misdemeanor sexual imposition and abduction, a third-degree felony."
The 31-year-old from Cincinnati promises he's a changed man and will stay out of trouble.
"I do more thinking before I do things now. At first, it was just like on (the) go," Broner said "The Last Stand" podcast with Brian Custer back in September. "Whatever, I just never thought about it, I just did it, and that somewhat got me in certain situations, but now I just try to think about things and try to do things the right way."
The undefeated Santiago (14-0-1, 10 KOs) fights in the United States for the first time, after competing primarily in his native Puerto Rico. Santiago comes in on a bit of a hot streak, having stopped three of his last four opponents.
Can Broner right the ship, refocus, and embark on a career resurgence? Or does Santiago destroy the party?
