Both British welterweights seem eager to make it happen, but it has failed to cross the finish line multiple times in the past.

It’s the fight British boxing fans have been clamouring for for the best part of a decade, and very soon it could become a reality, as Bolton’s Amir Khan seems more confident than ever of a meeting with Sheffield’s Kell Brook.

Having had talks with promoter Eddie Hearn this week, Khan thinks that the bout is closer than ever, telling Sky Sports: “Now is the right time to make that fight happen with Kell. We both have been world champions. We’re both British and in the north as well.”

For once, Brook and Khan appear to be on the same page, with ‘Special K’ claiming “aside from AJ vs. Fury, it is still the biggest fight in British boxing.”

Hearn said of the domestic super-fight in an interview with The Sun: “I would do the fight, it is still a great fight, but it’s not the fight it once was.”

Indeed, had the bout happened in 2015 or 2016, it would have been at the two fighters' respective peaks and Brook's IBF 147lbs belt could have been involved.

Though it would indeed be well past its peak, the years of animosity between the two still sits fondly in the minds of fight fans and the bout — and its buildup — would likely garner a fair amount of attention.
