Derrick James has only been working with Anthony Joshua for a few months so perhaps it’s unfair to expect a fully-fledged assessment from the Texas trainer at this stage.
Joshua returned to the ring earlier this month when he outpointed Jermaine Franklin over 12 rounds to register his first victory since the backend of 2020.
Joshua’s fight with Franklin saw the Brit have a different trainer in his corner for the third time in three fights but James is here to stay.
After taking Errol Spence and Jermell Charlo to gloried heights in the sport, James has compared his new charge to other members of his gym including Spence and Charlo.
“I had to assess, and I thought, ‘Okay, I can’t train him like I train Errol [Spence], Jermell [Charlo] or Frank [Martin]. Because he’s not where they are.’” said James on The DAZN Boxing Show.
“In terms of fame and success, of course he is. But it’s not about that. It’s about from the technical and educational aspect, he’s not where they are. So, some of the things they do, I can’t even think about doing with him.”
