Gennadiy Golovkin has not fought since losing to Canelo Alvarez last September, but the Kazakh star has been challenged by Jimmy Kelly if he does decide to come back.
Golovkin’s incredible run at middleweight was ended by Canelo in 2018 and their third meeting last year brought closure to what had been one of the best rivalries of the modern era.
If Golovkin does choose to fight on, then his status in the sport as one of boxing’s premier performers will ensure that there’ll be a long queue willing to take him on.
One of those men is Kelly, and the former world title challenger is excited at the prospect of taking Golovkin.
“I think my name should be in the hat for that fight.” said Kelly when speaking to ProBox TV regarding a fight with Golovkin.
“I beat Kanat Islam, a popular fighter from Kazakhstan. From what I can gather my name is well known over there due to that fight, and I just think I’m in the conversation. It excites me.
“He is arguably one of the best ever 160-pound fighters. He has had so many title defences. If you were going to fight Golovkin, now probably would be the right time but it is still an incredible task to defeat a man like him.”
Kelly added, “If it made sense and he wanted to have a homecoming fight over there, what an honour it would be to share the ring with him.”
