Deposed super-middleweight champion Caleb Plant is not considering a fight against unbeaten contender David Benavidez.
The former IBF champion lost to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last September as the Mexican completed his pursuit to become undisputed at 168lbs.
American fighter Plant says although he may one day face off against Benavidez, he is concentrating on his own progress for the time being.
“I’m in the gym training, working, and I’m focusing on continuing my legacy, and I fell down and scraped my knee, but I’m right back at it,” Plant told ES News.
Plant appears to have lost interest in chasing a fight with Benavidez.
“It seems like every time I try to make that fight happen, his promoter Sampson says, ‘Not right now. He tested positive for cocaine,’” he said.
“He lost his belt on the scale. That fight will happen. I know that fight will happen. Right now, as I said, I’m in the gym training, and I’ll be back in the ring soon.”
Plant may be able to give news in the next few months as he think he will be back in the ring this summer.
“By summertime,” Plant confirmed. “We’ll see — boxing changes by the day. By the time we get there, we’ll see where the cards fall.
“We got some things on the table, some things that I’m working on. Until then, like I was saying, I’ll continue to be in the gym training and working, staying focused, and I’ll be back.”
