Caleb Plant believes he has underlined his champion credentials after securing victory over Trevor McCumby to claim the interim WBA super middleweight title.
The former recovered from an earlier knockdown to deliver a ninth-round victory over his rival on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez's victory over Edgar Berlanga.
It marked a first career loss for McCumby and helped Plant rebuild his reputation after losses to Canelo and David Benavidez in two of his last three bouts.
The result marks a crucial one for Plant, who feels the result is testament to his drive and willpower after a pair of frustrating reverses.
"It was a pretty tough fight," he said afterwards. "I was just easing in. I proved that I can fight on the inside tonight and I did what I had to do to get that WBA belt.
"He caught me pulling out and hit me in the shoulder, but that's part of the game. He came in with wild punches and I just had to stay focused. That's what champions do.
"I knew I had him hurt and had to go to work. It was time to get my belt. Now I'm ready to go home and play with my daughter."
