Sergio Mora believes that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez would be favourite should he fight Gennadiy Golovkin, but thinks the older fighter has a chance of a trilogy win.
Golovkin added the WBA championship to his IBF middleweight belt on Saturday when he defeated Ryota Murata in Japan, and is currently expected to move up to 168lbs to face the Mexican later this year.
Ahead of any third fight between the pair Canelo must first face Dmitry Bivol on May 7, shown live on DAZN, and the Kazakhstani fighter would likely need to move up to 168lbs with Canelo pursuing a belt at 175lbs.
Now 40, former world champion Mora believes that age means that GGG would go into any match-up as underdog, but wants to see the two fighters in the ring again.
“It’s possible, but let’s talk about GGG, having power and experience,” he said on JABS as part of the DAZN Boxing Show .
“Canelo will come into this fight overconfident, bitter and angry, and wanting to knock out the man at 40 years old, especially as we’ve seen Golovkin looking ‘vulnerable’ against Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Murata.
“Canelo is going to be licking his lips. As a fan I still want to see it. I need that closure, I need that trilogy. We didn’t think we needed the Wilder v Fury trilogy and what did we get? Fight of the year!
“That’s what’s going to happen here. We really don’t need it but we’re glad we get to see it. It’s going to be historic, violent, but someone is going to get knocked out, most likely the older fighter. It’s a blood sport, it's painful, but sometimes we’ve got to see it.”
Despite the odds being in Canelo’s favour, Mora thinks that Golovkin would not turn down the fight even if he only has a slim chance.
“That’s the way this game works, and it’s also a business,” he explained.
“He deserves that trilogy, that money and that closure. If you [tell] Golovkin, ‘There’s a chance that he may get hurt and stop you,’ and asked him [if he wanted the fight], I guarantee you he would say ‘yes, I want it.’
“Any time you have that power, experience and that meanness, you’ve always got a chance.
“Two things that never leave fighters: your power and your chin. Those are two things Gennadiy Golovkin brings to the table.”
