Barak Bess believes that Hector Garcia poses a threat to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis ahead of an expected clash with Ryan Garcia next year.
Tank is on course to face the super featherweight fighter, unbeaten in 27 bouts in his career to date, this January.
The 31-year-old Dominican is a credible boxer in his own right and cannot be dismissed as just a tune-up fighter, claimed Barak, while talking on the DAZN Boxing Show.
Tank and Ryan Garcia are anticipated to meet in the ring after years of speculation, with a bout believed to be going ahead in April, and DAZN are set to show the event in North America.
Barak acknowledged the April plan, but looked more closely at a fight for Davis coming up in January.
“We got a fight, but we also got interim fights,” he said to Ak. “You said a tune-up for Gervonta Davis, my man, that is not a tune-up - Hector Garcia!
“This Garcia is the one who beat Chris Colbert, the one who beat Roger Gutierrez. This guy is a really good fighter. I do believe Tank is one of the best, and we’ve been waiting for him to step up competition since he fought Pedraza and guys like that years ago. We’ve been waiting for him to fight better guys.
"I think Isaac Cruz was good, he’s not getting credit for that, hurting his hand in the 10th round, outboxing him in the 12th. He’s proven that he’s great. But Hector Garcia is a great fight. He’s championship level.
“There’s always a possibility. People are saying tune-up, people are calling this an interim fight, but this is a qualified fighter. Doesn’t mean he’s good enough to beat Gervonta Davis, but if Gervonta wins, give him a lot of credit just for taking this fight before a big fight.
“Gervonta Davis was the guy whose name was thrown into pound-for-pound lists, but people were saying he needs to fight better competition. This is one of the top competitors. To show he is great, this is that guy.”
