Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is looking to make history on Saturday night by becoming the first undisputed super-middlweight champion in the four belt era, but already some are wondering whether the Mexican can compete at cruiserweight.
Canelo has already won a world title at light heavyweight after beating WBO champion two years ago.
Speaking on the latest episode of The DAZN Boxing Show, Tony Bellew woudn't be surprised if Canelo makes the step up to 200lbs.
“I wouldn’t put it past him,” Bellew said when asked by host Ade Oladipo whether Canelo can beat WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu.
“He’d have to be very careful of Makabu’s left hand. The boy can really punch, he snapped my nose and put me on my back for four or five seconds."
Bellew and Makabu fought for the WBC belt at Goodison Park, Liverpool, in 2016. And the hypothetical prospect of Canelo vs. Makabu one day had the Brit highly intrigued.
“He’s that good Ade, I wouldn’t put it past him because Makabu’s small for a cruiserweight, but he’s extremely powerful.”
“I could never write Canelo off, the only time I would write him off is if he goes up to heavyweight, that’s too much.”
The Canelo vs. Plant fight will not air on DAZN. However, The DAZN Boxing Show will be in Las Vegas during fight week for live episodes, exclusive interviews and more.
