Canelo Alvarez did watch David Benavidez produce a unanimous decision over Oleksandr Gvozdyk to become the WBC interim light heavyweight champion.
But Alvarez wasn't that impressed at all. In appearing on the "Pound 4 Pound" podcast with Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo recently, the unified super middleweight world champion explained how he believes Benavidez had a rough time at his true weight of 175 pounds.
"I think that's his weight class — the 175 — and you can see, he's very different," Alvarez began detailing. "He can do nothing with a fighter who retired in 2019 and coming with two easy fights and then, look. It's different when you're in your weight class and fighting with guys in your weight."
Alvarez will be defending his unified 168-pound titles against Edgar Berlanga on September 14, live on DAZN, with many boxing critics and fans alike believing that opportunity should have gone to Benavidez. Alvarez isn't ruling out the fight with Benavidez, but has once again made it clear that it needs to be negotiated on his terms.
"I'm in the business, I can do the fight," Alvarez said about possibly facing the undefeated Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs). "If the money is right, it's OK.
"But I like to be comfortable, I like to be in peace," he continued. "They want to talk with me when I have a fight in front and I don't like to work in that way. I say 'look, I don't want to talk about any other fight. After the fight with Berlanga, we can sit and talk about it and make everything sense.'
If it doesn't come to fruition, though, Alvarez is alright with that, too.
"But if not, I'm not begging for anything," he insisted. "I'm good in the position I am. I'm not begging to make a fight, I'm not begging to make that fight, I don't need anything. I'm doing my own business, I'm good.
"If you want to make that fight, OK, we can talk after the fight."
