Caleb Plant is more than equipped to give his thoughts on a possible Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez mega bout.
After all, Plant is their only common opponent, having suffered an 11th-round TKO loss to Alvarez in November 2021 before dropping a unanimous decision to Benavidez in March 2023.
So after having those experiences, who does Plant think would be the winner in a potential Alvarez vs. Benavidez fight? Although he pinpointed key attributes for each fighter, Plant just couldn't bring himself to pick a victor.
"Those guys are both great fighters and both of them have different styles," Plant began telling veteran journalist Kevin Iole recently. "I think Canelo hits harder for one punch, putting his combinations together than David, but David puts his hands together more than Canelo does."
He added: "When it’s big fights like that it’s hard for me to just say ‘oh this guy will win or that guy will win’, because if Canelo got in there and won, if he stopped David, if he caught him with a big shot or was able to get on him or just win and get his hand raised, you know you couldn’t say that you’d be extremely surprised.
"And David with his ability, if he was able to get in there and get the job done, I wouldn’t be surprised either.”
The undefeated Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) moved past the idea of fighting Alvarez at least for the time being, having defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk via unanimous decision in June to become the new WBC interim light heavyweight world champion.
Meanwhile, Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) will look to defend his unified super middleweight world titles against Edgar Berlanga on September 14, live on DAZN.
