Promoter Stephen Espinoza believes Edgar Berlanga will be a tough opponent for Canelo Alvarez when they fight next month.
Berlanga and Canelo go at it on September 14, live on DAZN, as the unified super middleweight champion makes his second appearance in the ring for 2024.
Canelo has not suffered a defeat since his move up to 175lbs against Dmitry Bivol a couple of years ago, and he was in control throughout his May 2024 fight against Jaime Munguia.
Berlanga is 22-0 but despite that unbeaten record is the underdog, and speaking to BoxingScene, Espinoza thinks both contenders are determined to secure victory.
He said: “Both fighters showed a bit of spark, some fire, some emotion and you clearly got the sense that Berlanga is not a guy who is there just to show up, that he’s motivated, that he’s not intimidated and all of that really helps because when you've got a guy as experienced and as accomplished as Canelo, one of your big challenges is convincing people that his fights will be competitive.”
