Cheavon Clarke has sights set on world champion after Tommy McCarthy clash

Cheavon Clarke and Tommy McCarthy go head-to-head on Saturday night.

British cruiserweight prospect Cheavon Clarke has his sights on challenging for world honours in the near future.

Clarke is in action on Saturday night when he takes on former European champion Tommy McCarthy in Belfast on the undercard of Lewis Crocker vs. Jose Felix live on DAZN

With a 7-0 record, McCarthy is a huge step up in talent when it comes to the opponents Clarke has faced in the past, but if he can get the win at the Ulster Hall, the former Olympian could find himself fighting at the top level sooner rather than later.

If Clarke is in a position to challenge for a world title, there is one person he would like to face, WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith.

Clarke and Billam-Smith have history with the pair meeting twice as amateurs, and Clarke believes he could be on a collision course to face "The Gentleman" once again.

"[Billam-Smith] has always worked hard," Clarke told Sky Sports

"We fought each other twice and we trialled for GB Boxing together. I went ahead and he went pro.

"I'm sure one day soon we will bump heads."

Since beating Lawrence Okolie to claim the WBO belt in May, Billam-Smith has made one successful defence after stopping Mateusz Masternak this past December and is now linked with a long awaited showdown with Richard Riakporhe who is the only man to beat Billam-Smith in the professional ranks.
