Claressa Shields has accused unified women's light middleweight champion Natasha Jonas of asking for too much money during their negotiations for a potential fight.
Shields has already made a name for herself in the UK when she beat Savannah Marshall last year to become the undisputed women's middleweight champion, and the American was eager to head across the Atlantic Ocean to add more accolades to what has been a tremendous career.
However, despite the two camps having talks, a deal could not reached and Shields revealed the reason why on The DAZN Boxing Show.
"She [Natasha Jonas] was asking for retirement money, that’s why," Shields claimed.
"She acted like she needed to get a paid a million dollars to fight against me."
The American then went onto question Jonas' popularity in the U.S., and whether the lack of stardom means that the British fighter should not be allowed to ask for a higher fee in fight negotiations with Shields' camp.
"Natasha Jonas is not known here in America; I’m known in both the UK and America that’s why I get paid the way that I do," Shields said.
"I guess she’s a big star over there, maybe, but she hasn’t put in the groundwork to be asking for the kind of money she was asking for.
"We were asking for a world title fight; we weren’t asking for a fight to help her retire and take care of her family."
