Even in the midst of fight week and being on the brink of challenging WBC heavyweight world champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse on Saturday night, live on DAZN, Claressa Shields took some time out to give an update on her T-Rex Promotions.
While speaking with DAZN as part of an exclusive interview, Shields shared that ideally T-Rex Promotions helps continue to bring in a wave of new women's boxers for years to come long after she calls it a career.
"I don’t know how many years I have left in boxing but I know when I retire, a lot of the spark that I bring will leave because I leave," Shields told DAZN.
"But it’s like we have to figure out a way to keep that spark and keep the sport going."
She added: "So I want to help with Samantha [Worthington], help build her up to where she has her own fan base and she can do her hometown fights. But she has to know what’s the blueprint to get there and because I’ve already experienced it, I can help her get through a few hoops because she’s with me."
It's Shields' hope that Worthington and other fighters she signs will continue to pay this forward.
"And then maybe when I retire and I’m done, she will become a promoter and do the same thing that I did," Shields tacked on.
"She can sign multiple women and show them the way. So the sport continues and the legacy of women’s boxing keeps growing. It doesn’t just need to be one name and one face."
