The welterweight is working towards a title fight.

Eddie Hearn and Conor Benn are both keen on a possible clash with Chris van Heerden.

The 34-year-old South African is lined up as the next opponent for Benn as he continues on his road towards a world title challenge at 147lbs.

Speaking to IFL TV, Matchroom head Hearn explained that Van Heerden was picked after Maurice Hooker was forced to pull out.

“Ready to go with that fight,” he said. “Maurice Hooker accepted the fight, he called a week later, said he got his back injured on the second day of training. He was our first choice.

“I think it’s very likely to be Chris van Heerden.”

For his part, 25-year-old Benn was keen to fight him, saying: “Of course I am. Any of the top Americans,” and could not understand why he was criticised for taking him on.

“They’re good enough for Shawn Porter to fight, or Amir Khan, or [Vergil] Ortiz, but when I fight them it’s, ‘Oh, he’s past it’ - It’s just mad.”

Hearn agreed, praising his likely opponent.

“He’s extremely tough, a tough tough man. No disrespect to [Chris] Algieri - he’s bigger, he's tougher, he’s more durable,” he claimed.

“We’re two or three fights behind [Jannis] Ennis and Ortiz, not in terms of ability, but in terms of progression.”
