Could Canelo Alvarez be stripped of world titles if he does not face David Benavidez?

David Benavidez wants to continue chasing his dream of becoming a two-time world champion at super middleweight.

After beating Caleb Plant last month, Benavidez cemented his position as the mandatory challenger for the undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez who returns to action against John Ryder on May 6.

However, if the Mexican gets past Ryder next month, it's likely that he will pursue a rematch with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol later this year.

If that is the case, it maybe something that benefits Benavidez who believes that Alvarez could be stripped of two 168lb titles as a result.

"Obviously the one fight that everybody wants is Canelo," Benavidez told The DAZN Boxing Show

"I think I earned it, but if he wants a go at Bivol then what I think is going to happen is that maybe because I have been the mandatory for the past three fights for the WBC belt, I think maybe he’ll get stripped of that.

"I was hearing some talks that he might get stripped of the WBA belt too if he doesn’t accept a fight with me, so I think what comes after this is if he doesn’t get in the ring might be me versus David Morell or me versus Charlo for the WBC and WBA belt.

"Even if you take Canelo out of the equation, those are still huge fights for me, it’s still my dream that I’m chasing after."
