Daniel Dubois is being set on a path to challenge for the WBA heavyweight title by his promoter Frank Warren.
Dubois suffered an upset at the backend of 2020 when he was forced to take a knee, and a count, against Joe Joyce when he suffered a broken eye socket.
That left him out of months for half a year as he recovered, but he did not seen gunshy when he eventually returned, stopping Bogdan DInu and then Joe Cusumano.
The 24-year-old Londoner has held the WBC silver, WBO international, British and Commonwealth belts, and then took the WBA interim belt (now withdrawn across all weights by the governing body). He is still in line to face off against American heavyweight Trevor Bryan, who is the WBA regular champion.
“Daniel will be right back in business on one of our first shows of 2022,” Warren said, reported BoxingScene.com. “He has rebuilt this year in a spectacular fashion and is now right in the running for a world title shot in the New Year.
“The WBA is the obvious path for him to go down as he has been installed in the No.1 spot by virtue of him winning the Interim title and a fight against the champion Bryan clearly appeals to us.
“Success against Bryan would put Daniel in position for a shot at the Oleksandr Usyk-Anthony Joshua rematch winner later in 2022.
“So there are some huge fights and nights in the pipeline for Daniel and 2022 will be a defining year for a young man I have always believed is destined for the top.”
